NORTH ALASKAN KAYAK REPLICA
Replica of the California Academy of Science's 0005-165
This kayak is 15'8" long and 22-13/8" wide. The history of the original is unknown, but it is clearly from North Alaska, though is of a curved-form-- most North Alaskan kayaks in museums have very straight (or even reverse) sheer-lines. The lines of this kayak are published in "Kayaks of Alaska."
Whidbey Island, 2014.
Launch Day, 2010. I launched this replica in surf at Arch Cape-- certainly not the sort of comditions these kayaks were intended for, but nonetheless it handled it all quite well. It turns very easily, spinning 180 degrees with a single firm extended stroke. These pictures are of my brother Don using an Aleut paddle with this kayak.
